Who's at the feeder?

A live camera on our bird feeder in Ireland. Feed the birds and watch who turns up.

Checking the feeder…

How feeding works.

€1

One small portion.

Every euro drops one portion of seed onto the tray, live on camera.

Seed first. The rest to BirdWatch Ireland.

We keep only what the seed costs. The rest goes to BirdWatch Ireland every month, and we post the totals.

SeedBirdWatch Ireland

Daylight only.

Feeding stops at night, is capped every day, and pauses if disease is reported nearby.

Feeding birds. Without spreading disease.

A school science project from the west of Ireland.

Scroll to see the feeder.

One small portion at a time.

The tray stays empty between feeds, and a camera records every visit.

Feeders bring birds close. But a tray that's always full gathers crowds of birds on the same dirty surface. That's how trichomonosis spreads, a deadly finch disease passed on through shared food and water.

What we're testing.

Can small, watched portions be safe?

In 2026 BirdWatch Ireland advised against garden feeders from 1 May to 31 October. Nobody has tested whether portioned, monitored feeding carries the same risk. That's the gap BirdLink looks at: daylight only, capped every day, with a cleaning schedule.

How accurate is the AI?

Every correction shows us where it goes wrong.

Do people get more interested?

A short survey before and after, plus how often people come back.

Can we spot sick birds?

Real cases go to the Irish Garden Bird Survey's sick finch scheme.

Does feeding raise money?

How often people give, and how much, when giving also feeds a bird.

Every visitor.

Named by AI and checked by you. Tap a bird to read about it, or tell us if the AI got it wrong.

Add a bird.

Spotted one in your garden or at school? Send a photo or a short clip, and the AI tells you what it is.

Questions.

Feeding

How do I feed the birds?

Tap Feed the birds for €1 and pay on Buy Me a Coffee. Every €1 drops one portion of seed onto the tray, live on camera. You can pay for up to 10 portions at once.

I fed the birds, but they didn't show up on the live stream.

Try these three things:

  1. Make sure you're watching live. Tap LIVE in the corner of the player. If it's grey, you're watching an older moment.
  2. Check the stream is up to date. On slow Wi-Fi it can fall behind. Reload the page to catch up.
  3. Missed the moment? Rewind the stream a minute or two to see your seed drop.

Birds come in their own time. Your seed stays on the tray, and every bird that comes for it shows up in Birds.

Why is the feeder asleep or paused?

We follow BirdWatch Ireland's guidance. Feeding stops at night, is capped every day, and pauses if sick birds are reported nearby. If you pay while it's paused, your seed drops at the next safe time.

Where does my money go?

We keep only what the seed costs. The rest goes to BirdWatch Ireland every month, and we post the totals here.

Can I get a refund?

If you paid by mistake or paid twice, email us within 30 days and we'll refund you.

Birds and AI

How does the AI know which bird it is?

When a bird lands, the camera takes a photo and an AI names the species. It can be wrong, so you can tap any bird and suggest the right name. Our team checks every suggestion.

I think a bird looks sick. What do I do?

Tap the bird and choose Does this bird look sick? Our team checks every report, and real cases go to BirdWatch Ireland's Irish Garden Bird Survey. For an injured bird, contact a vet or a wildlife rescue.

Can I add my own bird photos?

Yes. Go to Add a bird and send a photo or a short clip. The AI tells you what it is, and you choose whether everyone can see it or only you.

You and your data

What do you keep about me?

No accounts, names or emails, and no IP addresses. If you say OK, your browser keeps a random code so we can tell when someone comes back. The same code links your two surveys and your photos, and blocks a device that keeps sending junk. You can delete it all on the Privacy page.

Can the camera see people?

It points at the tray. Only frames where the AI sees a bird are shown on this site. Everything else stays on our own computer.

What happens to photos I send?

A person checks each one before anyone else can see it. Photos with people in them are never shown.

Terms of Use

Last updated 29 October 2026

By using BirdLink you agree to these terms. If you don't agree, please don't use the site.

1. Who we are

BirdLink ("we", "us") is a non-commercial student project by Ivan Savieliev at Coláiste Bhaile Chláir (Claregalway College), Co. Galway, Ireland. It is not a company and not a registered charity, and it is not part of BirdWatch Ireland. Contact: team.birdlink@gmail.com.

2. The site is a beta

BirdLink is a school research project. Features can change, break or stop without notice. The live stream, the AI and feeding may be offline at any time.

3. Photos and clips you send

  1. Send only photos or clips that you took yourself, of birds, with no people in them (no faces, bodies, car plates or house numbers).
  2. Don't disturb birds to get a photo. Never approach or handle a nest. Nests are protected under the Wildlife Acts.
  3. You keep the copyright. You give BirdLink a free, non-exclusive licence to store your photo, add our watermark, show it on BirdLink, and use it in our exhibition poster, report and presentation for BT Young Scientist 2027. This licence ends when you delete the photo, except for exhibition material already printed.
  4. Public photos appear in the Birds library after our team checks them. Only me photos are shown only in your browser, but our team still sees them when checking uploads.
  5. You can switch between Public and Only me, or delete a photo, any time from "Your birds" on the same device.
  6. We send each photo to our AI service to name the bird (see the Privacy Notice).

4. What is not allowed

We can hide or remove any upload. When a photo breaks these rules, the device that sent it gets a strike. Three strikes block uploads from that device. If you think a strike was a mistake, email us and we'll look again.

5. AI answers and sick-bird reports

The AI that names birds can be wrong. Its answers are a guess, not a fact, and never veterinary advice. If you suggest a correction, we use it to measure how accurate the AI is.

If you report a sick bird, our team reviews it. Real cases may be shared with BirdWatch Ireland's Irish Garden Bird Survey. Reports never include your personal details. For an injured bird, contact a vet or a wildlife rescue.

6. Donations and feeding

  1. Donations are made through Buy Me a Coffee, and its own terms apply to the payment. It takes a fee from each payment.
  2. A donation is a gift. You don't buy any goods or service, and it is not tax-deductible.
  3. Each €1 drops about one portion of seed onto the tray, live on camera. Feeding stops at night, is capped each day, and pauses if disease is reported nearby. When feeding is paused, your portion is dropped at the next safe time.
  4. We keep only what the seed costs. Everything else goes to BirdWatch Ireland once a month, and we publish what came in, what the seed cost and what was passed on.
  5. No refunds, except for a payment made by mistake or charged twice. Email us within 30 days with the date and amount.

7. Children

Anyone can watch the stream and browse the library. If you are under 16, ask a parent or guardian before you send a photo or fill in a survey.

8. Our content

The BirdLink name, logo, website design, text and code are © Ivan Savieliev. All rights reserved. Don't copy them, or remove our watermark from media, without our written permission. Linking to BirdLink is welcome.

The live stream is shown through YouTube, and YouTube's terms apply to it.

9. Responsibility

BirdLink is provided "as is", without any promise that it will always work or be accurate. As far as the law allows, we are not responsible for loss caused by using the site. Nothing in these terms limits rights you have under Irish consumer law.

10. Changes and law

We may update these terms. The date at the top shows the latest version. These terms are governed by the law of Ireland.
